Viking glow-bar igniters: the most predictable failure in the trade
A Viking oven that takes longer to light each month, then glows without lighting at all, has an igniter drawing too little current. On a gas oven the glow bar is not only the flame source, it is the switch as well. It sits in series with the oven safety valve, and that valve opens only when the element pulls the current it was specified to pull. As the element ages its resistance climbs and the current falls, and there is a long window in which it looks brilliant and still cannot open the valve. That is why the most common wrong conclusion in the trade is that a glowing igniter must be a good one.
The glow bar is the switch, not just the flame
A gas oven with hot-surface ignition works as one series circuit. The control calls for heat, the element heats to incandescence, and the current it draws passes through a bimetal in the oven safety valve. That current warms the bimetal, the valve opens, gas reaches the burner, and the glowing element lights it. None of that is optional: below its specified current the valve stays shut however bright the bar looks, and the oven sits there glowing and cold. Two families of element are in service, the older silicon carbide type, which draws more current and takes longer to come up to temperature, and the silicon nitride type, which draws less and heats faster. They are not interchangeable.

Preheat first, then the delay, then the thump
The failure is gradual, which is why it is the most predictable one in the trade and also why it gets tolerated for months. Preheat starts taking a little longer. Then a pause opens up between the bar glowing and anything happening, and eventually a soft thump when the burner does light, which is gas that collected in the cavity while the valve was making up its mind. Baking gets unreliable well before anything looks broken, because an oven that needs several extra minutes to establish heat is not the oven the recipe assumed. Broil may still be perfect, since most gas ovens with two burners carry a separate igniter for each.

- A delay of a minute or more between the bar glowing and the burner lighting
- A soft thump at light-off, which is delayed ignition
- A faint smell of unburnt gas at the start of a bake cycle

How a technician confirms it, and why timing matters
The measurement is a clamp ammeter around one leg of the igniter circuit while the oven is calling for heat, read against the current specified for that element. Below spec condemns the igniter even if it looks perfect; in spec with a valve that never opens condemns the valve instead. The second number is time, from the element energizing to the burner lighting. Carbide elements are slower than nitride ones by design, so the figure that matters is not a universal one, it is what this oven used to do against what it does now. That is a live circuit on a gas appliance, so the test belongs to a technician. Time the delay over two or three cycles and write the numbers down before you call anyone.
Why swapping the igniter is sometimes the wrong repair
The igniter is the usual answer, not the only one. The safety valve fails in its own right, and on an oven run for a year with a weak element it has been asked to open on marginal current the whole time. Wiring is the second candidate: the connection at the igniter sits in a hot part of the cavity, the ceramic connector chars, and a high-resistance joint there produces exactly the same low current as a tired element. On ovens with separate bake and broil circuits, the relay or control output serving one burner can fail while the other works, which reads like a dead igniter until somebody measures for voltage at the connector.

Handling, and why this one is not a homeowner job
Glow-bar elements are brittle ceramic and unforgiving of handling. They break from a knock that would not mark a piece of metal, and the working surface should not be touched with bare fingers, because skin oils leave a spot that runs hotter than the rest of the element and shortens its life. Past that, the job is inside a gas appliance: the burner often has to be dropped to reach the mounting bracket, the gas has to be shut off and the joint leak-tested afterward, and the circuit is live at line voltage while it is being tested. It is also easy to disturb burner alignment while working around it.
What it costs to live with, and what it costs to fix
Igniters are consumables rather than components. Every call for heat runs the element through a thermal shock cycle, so life is measured in cycles rather than in years, and a household that bakes several times a week gets through them faster than one that uses the oven at the holidays. There is no honest number to quote. The element is at the modest end of the parts list for a professional range, the safety valve is a good deal more, and most of the spread in a bill is access rather than component, which is why a built-in wall oven costs more to do than a range that slides out. The reason not to run one to failure is the delayed ignition in the middle of the sequence.

The igniter glows bright orange. Does that not mean it is working?
No, and it is the most expensive misunderstanding about gas ovens. The element is wired in series with the safety valve, so it has to draw a specified current in order to open it. Glow says the element still conducts. Only an ammeter says whether it conducts enough.
Broil lights but bake does not. Is it still the igniter?
Probably, because most gas ovens with two burners carry a separate igniter for each and one can fail while the other has years left in it. That is not proof. The control output serving that burner, the wiring to it, or the valve on that circuit produce the same symptom, which is why the readings come before the part order.
Can I replace a glow-bar igniter myself?
It is not a job to take on. The element is brittle ceramic that should not be handled on its working surface, the burner usually has to be dropped to reach it, the circuit is live at line voltage during testing, and the gas connection has to be leak-tested once it is back together.
